One in three university applicants rejected

Over 200,000 denied their place at university

We had expected that less people would be applying to go to university after the proposal to more than double the fees, but we had not expected that universities would be turning people away.

More than 200,000 people missed out their university place last year after universities rejected almost one in three UCAS applicants, according to official figureds.

Approximately 57,000 more people failed to get a university place than in 2009, despite there being almost 6,000 more places than the previous year.
